I was fortunate enough to travel with the KHS Travel Club this summer to England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Shout out to Mrs. Rankin for all of her hard work organizing the amazing trip of a lifetime through EF Tours. Below, shared some of my favorite photos (click to enlarge) and some reels can be seen on my instragram @marvelsofmisswestphal. Last but not least, here are the alphabets I created while I on the trip!

This year, at the 8th Grade Promotion ceremony, I started a new tradition which I hope to keep in the future at KMS. Traditionally, awards are given for Student of the Year in all core subjects - Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts. In addition to the "Director's Award" in Music, I wanted to add an ART AWARD! This year, I chose Eddie Chaperon as the recipient. Eddie is an INCREDIBLY talented artist who clearly is passionate about the arts and working on his skill set. I cannot wait to see what he creates in his high school years in the art room next door. Below, I included the little award I made for him in addition to some of his work from this year. (click on the images to enlarge them) Way to go Eddie! Check out the 8th Grade Memory Movie and the Ceremony below. (I give Eddie his art award at about the 46:00 mark in the ceremony video) Shout out to Mr. Cowen on all of his hard work on the Memory Movie!
Thank you to all of the students who helped me clean and organize the art room at the end of this school year! It felt good to have a head start on preparing the classroom for the fall. I have a few projects I want to work on this summer, but for now, it's time to enjoy a much deserved break for ALL!
My first year as a FLIVVER has flown by. It has been a busy, challenging and very rewarding experience to start at a new school with new colleagues, fresh faces, and a different art room to adjust to. As the final week of the school year approaches I am very thankful for my initial year at Kingsford Middle School and I look forward to years to come! I have enjoyed getting to know my students and create art with them this year. Check out the post below for a little update on what projects we've done in the last few weeks of school. Click on thumbnail images to enlarge them. Life SkillsMy lovely afternoon small life skills class created portraits inspired by Bisa Butler. We also took some photos because it was our last day with all 5 students. This group has been a joy to see every afternoon and I'll miss them! Art 5The last of 6 weekly rotations for the 5th grade classes have been spent making Circle Loom Weavings showing our last element of art: TEXTURE! Art 6The projects below from the 6th grade artists are Notans. Notans are a great example of Positive and Negative Space in the art world. 6th Graders completed the Agamograph project. Agamographs combine two images into one. Students illustrated two contrasting drawings showing all 6 elements of art. After the drawings were complete, they were cut into strips and glued onto a separate folded paper in an alternating pattern. 6th Grade students also helped make art to fill the last display cases of the year to wish everyone a great summer! Art 7The final project in 7th grade was the 1 Point Perspective Room drawing. Art 8After reviewing some color theory, 8th grade students created the Analogous Radial Designs below using carbon paper to create a symmetrical design and tempera paint. The final large project for this class was the World Landmark Collage. Collages were created with transparencies, printed landmark images, sharpies, glue sticks, and magazines. PrimetimeAs an 8th grade primetime teacher, I got to experience my first 8th Grade Dinner Dance on May 27th and it was a blast! Shout out to the 8th grade advisors for organizing a great event and I already look forward to next year!
Check out the write up on Kalia in the Daily News HERE.
Congratulations are in order for Kingsford Middle School 6th grade student Kalia Lampi! Kalia was recently chosen as one of the winners of the annual Meemic Masterpiece Art Contest. My 2nd trimester Art 6 class was assigned the task of creating a submission. Students brainstormed, completed critiques with their peers, and eventually had one final project. The students pictured below completed the entire submission process in addition to turning in their work for a grade. Each year, this contest invites K-12th grade students to submit an original piece of artwork using a theme for inspiration. For this year, the theme was: For Your Safety. Students had to choose between vehicle, pedestrian or online safety. Kalia said, “My art piece was inspired by driver's safety, I drew a fox crossing the road, and the person in the car on their phone. I used pencils and watercolors.” The committee of judges chose 44 winners from entries submitted from students in Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia. Each winning student artist will receive a HP Chromebook, a framed certificate, and their submission will be featured in a virtual art gallery later this year. In addition, Kalia’s winning submission also earns a $300 school supply grant to be used by the teacher who coordinated the contest entry for the following school year. This contest was conducted by The Meemic Foundation for the Future of Education, a non-profit company started in 1992 by the Meemic Insurance Company. Both companies are focused on serving and giving back to dedicated educational communities. More details can be found here. Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! Being a new teacher comes with a LOT of work preparing for a new district, new coworkers, new students, and of course, a new classroom! My last big project of the summer was transforming the old pottery/5th grade art room into a functional space for 5th-8th grade art. Check out the photos below to see the end result. I cannot wait to make art with the students of Kingsford Middle School. Cheers to a great year to come! (click on the images below to enlarge) I attached some BEFORE photos below for reference to see the transformation.
