One of my goals for my 2nd year at KMS was to organize an art show for our middle school students. Through the year, I had all art students select ONE piece from their time in the art room to be displayed and I saved them. Last week, with the help of students, I sorted of all of the saved work and prepared it for display. Special shout out to my primetime class, some helpful early finishers, and Mr. Novara's 5th grade primetime for helping on Friday! Then this weekend... many hours and many rolls of masking tape later, the show is finally up! I wanted to keep this year SIMPLE and learn through the process so I can evolve it over the years and make it a community event. To start, this show will be on display for students and staff during the day. A vote is linked below but is only open to BTS email accounts. I plan to give 1st - 3rd place ribbons for each grade, 5th - 8th next week! Click on the images below to enlarge to see some of the process of display! The finalized art show can be seen below. Here is a little glimpse into the art room and what each grade has been working on: Art 5The youngest artists at KMS come to the art room for one week at a time during their exploratory rotation. During each prime time class' first week, they created the fabulous name design project and focused on learning art room routines and procedures. This assignment is a great way to explore the art room, use a variety of supplies, and it also is a wonderful way to help me learn names! The second week of art is spent creating a classic self-portrait. In the images below, you can see how much growth happens after only one day of practice! Dry erase boards were used to visualize a before and after in our short hour together. After that, I inserted my example to show the whole process and some completed examples. Students choose a song that represents them to fill the background. The final step is watercolor painting in a color scheme that we discuss from the color wheel (primary, secondary, warm or cool colors). Click on the images below to enlarge. Art 66th grade artists started with a large silhouette project breaking down each element of art in each section. Then, we mixed tints and shades of hues in the color theory mandala projects. Last week, the elements of art had to be visualized in fall illustrations, where their creativity blew me away! Up next, they will be creating landscapes inspired by artist Jen Aranyi. Art 77th grade artists are reviewing the Elements of Art while diving into them a bit deeper. Their first project was an overview of all 6 - line, color, shape & form, space, value, and texture. After that, they created the collaborative color theory cube project where they had to mix tertiary colors as well as tints and shades of the hues. The haunted house illustration gave them a chance to show all of the elements but also be a little creative at the same time. Most recently, we started a 1 point perspective room project, which they are currently working on. Art 88th grade students are creating projects that are focused on the Principles of Art. For PATTERN & BALANCE, they created a radial design using carbon paper to replicate their pattern of choice to create radial symmetry as a form of balance. The designs were finalized with an analogous painted color scheme. Next, they created portraits inspired by Tim Burton to show EMPHASIS. After learning about Tim Burton's signature style, the eyes of the portrait became the focal point or emphasis of the illustration. UNITY was shown in the collage portion of the world landmark projects, and CONTRAST can be seen in the op art spheres we wrapped up this week. Up next, we'll focus on RHYTHM & MOVEMENT. Life SkillsMy life skills art class is one of the highlights of my day. Having a small class of students that thrive on one-on-one environments gives them a great opportunity for creativity and expression. One example is the stained glass painting project they completed in my art room. I made a simple mixture of tempera paint and hand soap and it was applied using a sponge. The result is a bright and colorful addition to the art room that everyone loves.
After lots of work, the art room is finally ready for the school year. The first 5 pictures is a reminder of what the room looked like at the END of last year... and the collection that follows shows Day 1 of 2022! I hope everyone has a great year! (Click on the images below to enlarge)
Thank you to my cousin Mary for giving me a poster from her trip to the Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience. I already had a Starry Night poster but wanted to find a way to use this new Van Gogh addition. I measured the window in my classroom door, trimmed it to size, created a front and back and voila! I LOVE it. After that, I decided to add a little color to the supply room door because it felt left out. Little classroom additions make a difference!
After some vacation time with my family, I'm back to preparing for the upcoming school year. Today's mission was clearing out these two metal cabinets that surround the whiteboard. The cabinets are outdated and a bit of an eye sore, so I found areas in the room to reorganize what was stored in those cabinets. The plan is to remove them completely along with the wooden shelf above them to create more open space. I am anxious to see the result! Click on the images below to enlarge to see the slight change. Update 8/11 - The shelf has been removed, next up cabinets. You can already start to see how much space this change will give and the brightness it brings to the front of the room! Click on the images below to enlarge. Shout out to our amazing summer maintenance/custodial crew for tackling all of these projects! Update 8/12 - I started to spruce up the front of the room because I can't do anything with tables until the floors are waxed. It's coming along! I also had a good strength work out and cleaned this clay cabinet so I can use it for accessible art supply storage for students. I love the before and after pictures! Update 8/13 - Today I did a lot of laminating (thanks to Mrs. Newman for sharing her supplies with me!) to update some cabinet and wall displays. My main task was updating my objectives that are displayed on my tall cabinets. The cabinet to the right of each grade has a clip to hold the current project example that each class is working on. Update 8/14 - Today I FINALLY added my Senior wall from my former students at North Central. I placed this collage right by the exterior door of the classroom so I can see it when I arrive and when I leave. I wanted to get this task done last year, but did not have time. I also updated my "Wall of Fame" which is tradition I carried over from NCA as well. Click on the images below to enlarge. You can read more about last year's FIRST Student of the Year in Art HERE and how I started the concept at NCA HERE. Update 8/15 - I worked outside of my art room today because they are working on my floors. My first task was streamlining the 3 display cases I use through the year. I removed the glass shelves because I often am just working around them, stored them, and then covered the background with black roll paper. Next up, I still need to cover that small gap at the bottom, and then cut a square piece to fill the base of the case where I stand to hang up the work. I think the black will really help the art to stand out nicely!
After that, I started adding a little color to my primetime room so it is not so plain. I used old grid enlargement projects I had stored in the art room. I need to finish the borders and find some quotes to jazz them up! Lastly, I peeked into my art room to see how the progress is, and I think it's almost time for waxing! I cannot wait to get in there and get the final details set. Click on the images below to enlarge. I usually take June completely OFF from anything school related and enjoy the beginning of summer. Once July starts, I SLOWLY work my way back into the classroom, working on cleaning/organizing tasks and prepping for the fall. I started going through some supplies last week and organizing a cabinet at a time. Summer is just flying by, per usual. (click to enlarge images)
